Akrotiri (Cyprus)

Pays

Akrotiri is a British Sovereign Base Area on the southern coast of Cyprus, covering about 144 km² of coastal plain and rolling hills, bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

The region has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The nearby ancient city of Kourion flourished in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, leaving extensive ruins, including a theatre, baths, and mosaics. The area later fell under Byzantine, Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman, and British control before the modern arrangement.

Under the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee, the United Kingdom retained Akrotiri and Dhekelia as Sovereign Base Areas after Cyprus gained independence. The bases are administered by the UK Ministry of Defence, with RAF Akrotiri, a key Royal Air Force installation serving as a strategic air hub for NATO and regional missions. Civil administration for local Cypriot residents is coordinated with the Republic of Cyprus.
