Saint Andrew the Hymnographer, Archbishop of Crete

Saint Andrew the Hymnographer, born in Damascus in 650, later Archbishop of Crete, was a Byzantine hymnographer and bishop of the 7th–8th centuries. Known for developing the kanon, a structured liturgical hymn form still used in Eastern Orthodox worship. The Great Canon is his masterpiece. Contributions include numerous canons and stichera, influencing Byzantine chant and theological poetry. Served as Archbishop of Crete, shaping the island’s spiritual and cultural life. He died on July 4, 740, and is venerated as a saint in both the Orthodox and Catholic churches.
