Corfu (Greek: Κέρκυρα) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, the second‑largest of the Ionian group. Historically, the island passed through Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, French and British rule before joining Greece in 1864. Its capital, also called Corfu, features a UNESCO‑listed old town with Venetian, French and British architecture. Known for lush vegetation, sandy beaches and the distinctive cuisine, Corfu attracts millions of tourists annually. Cultural events include the famous Easter procession and the annual music festival in the historic Liston promenade.
