Le colonel Georgios Papadopoulos décède en prison à l'âge de 80 ans des suites d'un cancer. Chef de la junte qui imposa une dictature militaire en Grèce de 1967 à 1973, il avait été condamné à perpétuité après la restauration de la démocratie.
Eleftherios Venizelos, qui avait formé un gouvernement séparatiste à Thessalonique et après avoir obtenu l'exil du roi Constantin Ier, est nommé officiellement premier ministre et fait entrer la Grèce dans la 1e guerre mondiale aux côtés de l'Entente.
