Chalkis

Chalkis (Greek: Χαλκίδα), also spelled Chalcis, is the capital of the Euboea regional unit in central Greece. Situated on the Euripus Strait, it links the island of Euboea to the mainland and has been a key maritime and commercial hub since antiquity. Founded by Mycenaean Greeks, the city flourished under Classical, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule, leaving a rich archaeological heritage including the medieval castle, ancient temples and the 19th‑century bridge. Today it hosts about 55,000 residents and serves as an administrative, cultural and transport centre.
